Bengalureans form human chain to oppose steel flyover

  • As many as 3,000 Bengalureans united on Sunday to form a 4-km-long human chain to protest against the proposed 6.7-km steel flyover between Hebbal and Basaveshwara Circle.

  • The campaign has been initiated by Citizens Against Steel Flyover, a citizen’s movement.

  • The citizens have formed a chain from Mekhri circle to Chalukya circle.

  • Citizens urged the Karnataka government to scrap the Rs 1,791-crore project.

As many as 3,000 Bengalureans united on Sunday to form a 4-km-long human chain to protest against the proposed 6.7-km steel flyover between Hebbal and Basaveshwara Circle.


Holding placards, banners and billboards against the flyover, members of Residential Welfare Associations, social activists and NGO representatives stood along the footpath from Chalukya hotel in the city centre to Mekhri circle in the north side and urged the Karnataka government to scrap the Rs 1,791-crore project.


The project aims to decongest the road to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). However, citizens and activists under the banner of Campaign Against Steel Flyover (CASFo) are saying the project is an eyesore and will cost 812 trees and heritage buildings.


The proposed flyover is said to have three up-ramps and four down-ramps and as many as 2,68,000 vehicles are expected to ply on it. The BDA has revealed to media that Larsen and Tubro and Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd have participated in the tender process and so far, Larsen and Tubro has quoted the lowest rates. However, the tender is yet to be finalized.


Activists claim that the project was sanctioned without public consultation.


The citizens are expressing widespread outrage on public forums and social media under the #SteelFlyoverBeda tag. The protest on the online forum Change.org has received support from over 8000 individuals.


Some of the prominent personalities who participated included former Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde, historian Ramachandra Guha, film personalities Prakash Belawadi and Arundhati Nag, architect Naresh Narasimhan, fitness expert Wanitha Ashok and environmentalist Suresh Heblikar.
