Garment workers’ protests against PF withdrawal norms turn violent : News in Pictures

  • On Tuesday, the protests against new rules for withdrawal of Provident Fund by Garment workers turned violent. At least two KSRTC buses and one BMTC bus were torched.

Bengaluru: Garment workers in Bengaluru took to the streets in protest against the new amendments to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Strikes soon turned violent with protesters resorting to pelting stones and setting vehicles on fire, and the police 'lathicharging' to control the mob. 
Traffic came to a standstill as protests spread across various neighbourhoods. 
According to the new ammendment to EPF, employees will only be able to withdraw their contribution to their provident fund accounts. They will have to wait till they are 58-years-old or above to withdraw the employer’s contribution.
