One-day hackathon aimed at finding solutions to pressing civic issues that our city faces
Calling all passionate coders, designers, students and engaged citizens to address Bengaluru's civic challenges. Let's collaborate and create sustainable solutions to make a difference for our community and the city we call Home.
Get a team and utilize the BBMP data we will provide to create solutions. You can go solo, or get a team comprising of up to four people.
With the data provided you can a) interpret / visualize civic data b) create a mechanism /app that will enable audit, tracking and citizen participation c) create dashboards for the government / citizens to use. You can choose one of the following themes for the Hackathon
Civic infrastructure includes facilities consumed by citizens on a daily basis such as storm water drains, parks, roads etc. The app, created based on the data provided, should take into consideration questions pertaining to the quality of roads and parks. It can also consider questions on how the government intends to address civic issues at hand. Citizens can play a role in sharing their inputs about the quality of works initiated and track agency's progress

The citizens do not know what the quality of the parks around their neighbourhood is.
This refers to the services offered by the local government is available to the citizens e.g. police stations, fire stations, schools, colleges etc. The visualization of this data, along with citizen's feedback will go a long way in understanding and assessing the quality of these services and may give direction on how they can be improved.
Problem statement:
This section refers to the infrastructure works initiated by the government, and includes information about the projects planned, tenders floated, among others. The data can be visually represented so as to enable citizens to track the progress of the works.

There is no analysis done about the quality of the civic project of the area with respect to the projects that is in progress, turnaround time, etc.
BBMP frames its budget every year where they decide the projects to be allocated to various wards. The data can be made user-friendly for the citizens.

IChangeMyCity.com is a hyper-local social change network that has created communities of citizens in Bengaluru, keen on solving civic issues in the city. As of January 2016, the IChangeMyCity.com (ICMyC) has a registered user base of more than 3,00,000. ICMyC has helped solve problems ranging from indifferent garbage collection, poor street lighting, potholes and security related issues in the suburbs. It has also provided citizens with useful information on how much funds have been allocated to wards and constituencies and how the same has been utilised.
About Open Works: Open Works, one of the programmes at Janaagraha, aims at being a real-time platform for opening up data on the operations and finance of a City. Beginning with the creation of municipal data sets to empower communities with actionable data and ending with the creation of a data portal that is customizable to suit the requirements of a city and its civic works, the goal is to encourage citizens to engage with elected representatives and municipal officials to demand rational allocation of funds and better provision of infrastructure and services based on fully transparent governance.
Hosted in Bangalore's Electronics City, IIIT-B for Startups (an entity within Innovation Centre) is a hub for ICT4D entrepreneurship, innovation and research. Incorporated in the year 2009 as a Section 25 company with support from the Ministry of Information Technology (Government of India), the major objectives of this company are: a) To support and incubate new ventures from those outside IIITB which can realize a synergetic partnership with the institute faculty and students b) To promote commercialization of IP generated by faculty and students of the Institute - by incubating their ventures c) To encourage Industry to set up R&D centres in which their staff can work closely with faculty and students of the institute on joint R&D projects.
About I-MACX: I-MACX (IOT-to-Mobility Apps for Community Excellence), an initiative of IIIT-B Innovation Centre, focuses on accelerating civic excellence through the intelligent use of emerging technologies, I-MACX aspires to create an ecosystem that nurtures social / civic tech ventures that a) Serve our society and its citizens b) Re-imagine the ways governments and corporations function c) Function as extended arm of governments and corporations - thereby making the services available and accessible to citizens. To this end, I-MACX collaborates with various industry associations, social / civic organizations, independent experts and offers various programs / mentoring sessions to aspiring entrepreneurs / inspiring ventures to succeed.
Anyone with a burning desire to create sustainable solutions to civic issues that plague our city. You don't need to be a professional coder. The competition is open to anyone; students, entrepreneurs, programmers, and anyone with a ambition to bring about a change.Your team can consist of 2-4 people.

The workshop will enable you to meet other contestants, and introduce you to your mentors. It will be the perfecto opportunity to gauge your mentors' reaction to your ideas, and also to incorporate their recommendations. Please ensure the attendance of at least one member of your team.
