How to check for water-meter tampering in your house

February 02, 2012

Water meter tampering is an act of altering the meter readings secretly, thereby violating the laws. This often results in high water bills without much use of water, or paying less than what is actually being used. The amended BWSSB Act has incorporated new sections - 108A and 108B - to deal with water theft curb meter tampering. This allows the board to book violators and punish the guilty with a three-year jail term or with a penalty of Rs. 5,000.

Process requirements:

  1. In case of faulty meter or for meter testing, you can lodge a complaint by submitting a written application along with a testing fee of Rs. 25 to the concerned AEE (Assistant Executive Engineer), AE (Assistant Engineer) or EE (Executive Engineer). The stipulated time of response is 7 working days.
  2. For issues regarding water supply bills, you can file complaints with the AEE/AE/EE of the respective BWSSB office, either personally or in a written form. The time frame of response would be 15 working days.
  3.  Concerning issues of leakages in house connections, water and sewage lines you can refer to the BWWSB website on how to test water for contamination.

Documentation required:

  1. A written application for a complaint. Preferably in the local language.
  2. You can attach copies of at least 4 months water bills as proof. While this is not mandatory, it would only be a supporting document and help you validate your claim.
