Bengaluru comes to a halt as KSRTC and BMTC employees go on strike

The indefinite strike called by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSTRC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) from Monday has hit normal life.


More than one lakh employees of state transport corporations have gone on strike demanding for a 35 per cent wage hike, as well as 41 other demands. However, the state government has offered only a 10 per cent wage hike.


Thousands of people were stranded at major bus stands like Majestic, Shantinagar Bus stand, Mysuru Satellite station in the city assuming that they would get city buses to reach their destinations.


People had to rely on autos, cabs and private maxi cabs for commuting. Some of the autos and maxi cab drivers fleeced commuters by demanding hefty fare. Though the state government has appealed to the unions to call off the strike, the latter was unrelenting. Unions continued the indefinite strike even on Tuesday forcing many educational institutes to declare holidays.
