IChangeMyCity survey reveals Bengaluru has a shortfall of 1,100 public toilet complexes

December 10, 2017 By Team ICMyC

Bengaluru is short of almost 1,100 public toilet complexes. The National Guidelines set by the Swachh Bharath Mission (SBM) for public toilets that cater to a floating population of 500,000 in cities, prescribes 1 toilet seat per 100 men and 2 per 100 women.

The guidelines indicate that Bengaluru should have a toilet complex per 7 km street length. However, currently Bengaluru has one toilet per 24 km at the city level.

This data was revealed by IChangeMyCity, after they physically surveyed over 473 toilet complexes in Bengaluru and also geocoded them on a map.

The survey team analysed the condition of the toilet complexes under different parameters such as cleanliness, lighting, maintenance, clogged pots, functional flushes, availability of running water among others.

Toilets maintained through contracts scored better than those directly under BBMP. The civic body spent over Rs 5 crore on public toilets in 2016-17. To meet SBM guidelines, the corporation needs to spend an additional Rs 51 crore on public toilets, which it has allocated in its 2017-18 budget.
