Which bus? To where?

A comprehensive guide to bus numbers and routes across Bangalore.
Ever since its transformation from the Bangalore Transport Service (BTS) to the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) in 1997, the BMTC has made every attempt to encourage the use of Public transport across the city.
From a mere 1,800 buses in 1997, BMTC today co-ordinates close to 6,000 buses across the city. BTMC is also known to be an innovator, and develops regular citizen friendly offerings to make using public transport more convenient for commuters ; from beginning its ‘Vayu Vajra’ air conditioned Volvo buses in the early 2000’s to having pneumatic doors being installed in the ordinary buses (i.e. blue and white buses)in 2001.
They also began ‘Bus Day’ on February 4th in 2010 in order to encourage citizens to take public buses more frequently. On September 1st 2008, they introduced a 25% concession for senior citizens on bus fares as well as a 50% concession for all children below the age of 12 years. To keep up with a rapidly growing city, the BMTC increased the number of bus routes ( coverage ) and introduced the BIG 10 circle of buses. They are also credited with making Bangalore become the first city to introduce intra-city Volvo bus travel with the extra comfortable red ‘Vayu Vajra’ that ply across the city from point to point.
To help identify the bus circuits, every bus circle introduced by the BMTC has a distinct identity. Make sure you know that there is a big difference between the Red AC Volvo buses and the Blue and White buses and the routes they ply on.
- Red Board buses: These include bus numbers beginning from 211 to the 369 series. These bus routes predominantly cover the South Bangalore belt
- Black Board Buses: These include bus numbers from 1 series to 190 series buses. The bus routes that vary across the north south and central belts of Bangalore city.
Apart from the blue and white buses, BMTC introduced a new set of buses in ordered to connect 12 major sub-urban corridors across the city. These are called the BIG 10 and BIG Circle buses. Anyone new to the city will be able to recognise the Big 10’s with their characteristic green colour and the white BIG CIRCLE buses with coloured arrows drawn across the sides of the bus.
But recognising buses is not enough. One also needs to navigate to where one needs to go and here is a table that will help you connect a particular Bus board colour to a bus number and a particular bus route across the city.
